Magdeburg / Erfurt.

This would add around 1550 churches that once belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia, said Bettina Seyderhelm, outgoing chairwoman of the foundation and art consultant for the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM).

The funding area now includes around 4,000 churches and chapels.

The communities can apply for support for restoration projects - from the altar to church windows, paintings and inventory.

The theme of baptizing angels was once a focal point, many have been restored and there was an exhibition.

The foundation is currently devoting itself to the neglected children's epitaphs, monuments to deceased children.

There is at least one in every third church, said Seyderhelm.

Many are in bad shape.

Bettina Seyderhelm says: «I am of the opinion that we have epitaphs that concern us all.

The one for the children. "

These monuments for children could still provide consolation and help affected parents.

The art expert gave the example of a baroque children's epitaph in Aue-Aylsdorf near Zeitz, which was created for two ministers' children.

The pastor's wife cared for people suffering from the plague and thus infected her children, who died.

According to Seyderhelm, 17 new projects are pending for 2021, seven will be extended.

The total amount of funding is around 140,000 euros.

Seyderhelm also hopes for donations and donations from those interested in art in the future.

"For us, the small village church is just as important as the large Cranach altar," said Bettina Seyderhelm about the work of the foundation.

According to Seyderhelm, there is a measurement project for the climate in churches, the effects of the drought of the past three years are massive.

Paint peeled off altars and figures much faster than usual.

The Art and Cultural Property Foundation was set up in 1999 to support projects for the preservation, conservation and restoration of church art and cultural property in the then ecclesiastical province of Saxony.

The ecclesiastical province mainly comprised the area of Saxony-Anhalt, but also small parts of Brandenburg and Saxony.

The foundation was initially endowed with one million D-Mark, thanks to donations, the capital increased to 5.75 million euros before the merger of the two large Protestant regional churches in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia on January 1, 2009.

A further donation of two million euros was recently made, which made it possible to expand the foundation area.

Bettina Seyderhelm pointed out that in Thuringia, unlike in Saxony-Anhalt, there is a steady state subsidy for art and cultural property in churches.

The foundation's work is intended to complement this.
