Hiltpoltstein (dpa / lby) - A loud bang woke residents of a bank branch in the Forchheim district after an ATM was blown up on Monday night.

The unknown perpetrators had left "a trail of devastation", as the police announced on Monday.

The strangers had fed gas into the ATM in the branch in Hiltpoltstein (Forchheim district) and stole cash in the mid five-digit euro range after the explosion.

The investigators estimated the property damage to the building and the interior to be at least 200,000 euros.

Police helicopters and several police patrols searched for the unknown perpetrators.

The criminal police in Bamberg and a special group of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) have started the investigation.

ATMs are repeatedly blown up in Bavaria.

According to the LKA, criminals have been able to steal more than 1.4 million euros in the Free State alone since the beginning of the year.

The number of machines that were blown up is therefore at a similar level as in 2019.
