UN Secretary-General calls on Central African Republic elections to be held peacefully

  Xinhua News Agency, United Nations, December 26 (Reporter Shang Xuqian) UN Secretary General Guterres issued a statement on the 26th through a spokesperson, calling on the Central African Republic to hold parliamentary and presidential elections in a peaceful, inclusive and credible manner on the 27th.

  U.N. Secretary-General’s spokesperson Dijaric said in a statement that Guterres urged all parties in the Central African Republic to avoid any actions that may threaten lives, disrupt the electoral process and national stability, including violence, incitement to violence and hate speech.

  The statement said that Guterres strongly condemned the attacks against civilians, humanitarian aid workers, Central African Republic authorities, peacekeepers and election candidates, and called on the Central African Republic authorities to ensure that election-related violence is held accountable.

Guterres urged the signatories of the Central African Republic’s peace agreement to honor their commitments and resolve their concerns through peaceful means, and called on all political stakeholders and their supporters to resolve their differences peacefully through dialogue and appropriate institutional mechanisms.

  Guterres issued a statement through a spokesperson on the 25th, strongly condemning the attack on the UN peacekeeping force in the Central African Republic and the country’s national defense and security forces by militants that day and causing 5 peacekeepers to casualties.

  The Central African Republic is scheduled to hold parliamentary and presidential elections on the 27th.

In view of the recent series of violent incidents, the UN Security Council approved the deployment of two infantry companies and two multi-purpose military helicopters from the UN peacekeeping force in South Sudan to support the peacekeeping force in the Central African Republic.
