The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said yesterday that Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to receive the "Sputnik V" vaccine to prevent the emerging corona virus.

"President Putin said that he will receive the vaccination, he has taken this decision and is awaiting the completion of all formalities," Peskov added, according to the website of the official Russia 1 TV channel.

Russia launched a program to vaccinate those interested in the home-made Sputnik Vaccine this December, starting with the people most at risk of contracting the virus.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his website yesterday that people over the age of 60 can apply to receive the vaccination from today.

This came after the Ministry of Health announced that the vaccine had been approved for use by the elderly after a separate trial.

And Putin, who is 68 years old, said earlier that the Russian vaccine is effective and safe, and that he does not see a reason for not receiving it, adding that he is waiting for it to become available.

Putin has been practicing his work remotely mainly since the outbreak of the Corona virus in Russia, where he holds meetings via video links and has limited travel.

Last August, he said that his daughter participated in the clinical trial of the vaccine.

Yesterday, the Russian health authorities announced the registration of 552 deaths and 28,284 thousand new infections with the Corona virus during the past 24 hours, and the special operations room to combat the spread of the Corona virus said that the total deaths rose to 54,778 thousand cases, and the total number of confirmed cases of Corona in the country increased to Three million and 50,248 thousand injuries.

While 24,390 thousand of the injured recovered, bringing the total of those recovering to two million and 450,829 thousand people.

According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, Russia ranks fourth in the world in terms of the number of Corona infections, after the United States, India and Brazil.
