Munich (dpa / lby) - The Bavarian Ministry of the Interior expects a significant decrease in the number of break-ins in 2020 - but continues to warn, especially in the dark season, to be vigilant.

Even if the final annual crime statistics are still to be seen, it can be expected that the downward trend of recent years in burglaries will be confirmed, the ministry said on request.

According to the statistics, the number of attempted and completed break-ins has halved since 2014 and amounted to 4,342 in 2019. During the Corona lockdown in spring, the number of break-ins has fallen significantly compared to the same period last year - in April 2020 by around 50 Percent and in May by about 30 percent.

In autumn there were more break-ins than in spring, albeit less than in autumn 2019.

Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) emphasized the danger, however: “With the start of the dark season, burglars are booming again.

Even if many people are less likely to leave their own apartment due to the current Corona situation, we have to be extremely vigilant. "

That is why more controls are scheduled for the winter half-year.

One wants to focus specifically on "traveling groups of offenders and thus above all on supra-regional traffic routes and their alternative routes".

According to the previous evaluations, it could not be determined that the burglars had switched to commercial properties this year because many people were permanently at home.

Since the pandemic, the number of cases has been consistently below that of the previous year, it said.

The same applies to shoplifting.
