Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) has welcomed the start of vaccinations against the corona virus.

"That is a light at the end of the tunnel after this difficult year of the corona pandemic," said Müller, according to the announcement on Sunday.

The fact that science was able to develop a vaccine after just under a year is an impressive achievement.

"Even if we have to live with the corona pandemic for a certain time, it is important that we can protect the most vulnerable groups in our society now," said Müller.

In the capital, three residents of a nursing home in Steglitz were vaccinated by a mobile team that morning.

The senior citizens are all over 100 years old.

In the afternoon, the first stationary vaccination center with 80 cabins was opened in Treptow.

The vaccinations are an elementary component in fighting the pandemic, emphasized the SPD politician.

He hoped that as many Berliners as possible took advantage of this free and voluntary offer as soon as the vaccine is available.

In the next few months, however, everyone would have to continue and resolutely adhere to the rules of distance and hygiene.

"The pandemic does not end with the start of the vaccinations, I am still very concerned about the utilization of the intensive care units and we have to work together to ensure that the pandemic does not spread any further," appealed to Berlin's head of government.
