Green boss Robert Habeck wants to sharpen the German target of greenhouse gas reduction after the decision for a higher EU climate protection target.

"Germany always has to do more because we have higher CO2 emissions per capita than the average," said Habeck of the German press agency.

"The German target would have to be raised to at least 65 percent greenhouse gas reduction by 2030."

Germany's target is currently 55 percent less CO2 by 2030, based on the comparison year 1990. The EU-wide target was raised from 40 to 55 percent in December - but it is unclear what this means for the individual member states.

For Habeck it is clear: “If we have a new EU target, it must also be broken down into new national targets.

Anyone who has goals must be measured by them. "
