Kiel (dpa / lno) - If municipalities in Schleswig-Holstein want to buy sustainable paper clips or fairly produced soccer balls, they have been able to get help from the state since the beginning of the year.

"The competence center for sustainable procurement and procurement is a complete success," said Finance Minister Monika Heinold (Greens).

"It established itself quickly and has become an important partner for municipalities in sustainable procurement."

Since it went into operation at the beginning of the year, the competence center has handled 42 requests for advice from 22 municipalities.

According to Heinold, the trend is increasing.

Among other things, it has so far been about sustainable deposit systems for events, green electricity, the use of recycled paper, sustainable construction and sustainably produced workwear.

"This enables us to make a very concrete contribution to climate protection, fair trade and good working conditions on site," said Heinold.

Together with Environment Minister Jan Philipp Albrecht (Greens), they are promoting the permanent establishment of this model.

With changes to the procurement law, Schleswig-Holstein decided in 2019 that the municipalities should themselves decide on social and ecological standards when awarding contracts.

To this end, the state set up the aforementioned competence center at the building management company GMSH with an additional position.

Other GMSH employees provide partial support.

The contact point advises municipalities on safeguarding sustainability criteria.

According to Heinold, the aim is to establish a sustainable procurement system that takes resource protection, human rights and fair trade into account.
