The person must have traveled from the UK to celebrate Christmas in Södermanland and arrived in Sweden on 20 December.

The person experienced symptoms when he arrived at the family's house and tested himself the next day.

- It is a person who went to Sweden to celebrate Christmas with family.

The person fell ill when he came to the house in Södermanland, says region Sörmland's infection control doctor Signar Mäkitalo.

"Is the mutated virus"

The test result turned out to be positive and on the second day, the Public Health Agency confirmed that it is the variant of the coronavirus that is spread in the UK.

- It was the mutated virus.

We have sampled the others who were in the house and those samples have so far been negative.

In my opinion, the person has behaved in an exemplary manner during the trip to the house and avoided contact with other people and I assess the risk of infection spreading during the trip as low, says the infection control doctor Signar Mäkitalo.

"Not the only case"

Signar Mäkitalo describes that travelers from Great Britain traveled in a large car, had visors and mouth guards and traveled with the windows down.

Are you sure that the person has not passed on the infection?

- I'm sure of that, then of course it is the case that this is not the only case that has come to Sweden, unfortunately.

I really hope all travelers who came from the UK after December 12 were careful, says Signar Mäkitalo.

More contagious, but not more dangerous

According to virus researcher Ali Mirazimi at Karolinska Institutet, the new virus strain is not more dangerous than other virus variants, but more contagious.

- But if a virus spreads faster, more people become ill and more people need care, so from that point of view, it is important to be aware of this virus.

It can take over because it is easier to move on from person to person, he says.
