Les Sables-d'Olonne (dpa) - circumnavigator Boris Herrmann moved up to third place at his Vendée Globe premiere.

In the South Pacific, the Hamburg solo skipper achieved a strong position on Christmas Day with the racing yacht “Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco” despite the doldrums.

On Friday morning, around 15,000 kilometers from the home port near the 55th parallel south on the ice border, Herrmann ran a bow-to-bow race with Frenchman Jean Le Cam on “Yes We Cam!”.

"That's incredible!

I'm third on the tracker halfway around the world.

I would never have dreamed of that, ”said Herrmann.

The field of the remaining 27 of 33 yachts launched is led by the Frenchman Charlie Dalin on “Apivia”, who relegated his compatriot Yannick Bestaven to second place overnight in the unusually light winds of the Pacific.

It remains exciting in the leading group, because the boats in positions three to ten were separated by a total of only 90 nautical miles on the 47th day at sea on the Cape Horn course.

Due to unusual wind and weather scenarios, the fleet has been traveling around a week slower for the ninth edition of the Vendée Globe than at the previous edition in 2016/2017.

The arrival of the fastest boats in the port of departure and destination Les Sables-d'Olonne in France is not expected until mid-January.
