"There is no extreme onset of winter in sight," said Florian Engelmann from the German Weather Service in Leipzig on Friday.

But in some places there is hope for a blanket of snow - especially at higher altitudes.

At the weekend, the weather will be "wet and cold" with temperatures around freezing, said the weather expert.

With the beginning of the week, the situation calmed down again, said Engelmann. The temperatures were still around freezing point - mostly below at night and above during the day. Freezing moisture could also be a problem for drivers. With a view to New Year's Eve, no precise predictions could yet be made. "There is hope for snow," said Engelmann. However, we would have to wait for the next few days.
