Berlin (dpa) - What would our life be without animals?

Above all, probably a lot more boring.

Because some are responsible for extremely funny situations.

But there are also tragic fates in the animal world.

The year 2020 had these particularly animal moments ready.

THE BACHE VOM TEUFELSSEE: In the summer, people were amazed and laughed at the pictures of a particularly curious incident at the Teufelssee in Berlin: a wild boar and two freshmen were chasing a naked man there in early August.

The animal, which was probably looking for food, had a yellow bag in its mouth that belonged to the man - a laptop should have been in it.

The naked hunter also laughed uproariously when the photographer showed him the snapshots.

PIT UND PAULE: Their birth was a sensation, they are now real pubescent animals: The panda twins Meng Xiang and Meng Yuan, who are also lovingly called Pit and Paule, celebrated their first birthday in 2020.

"You are just getting cheekier," said the nurse Corvin Schmohl.

The birthday was the second special event for the two pandas this year.

At the beginning of the year, the visitors were able to see the two cuteness guarantors for the first time, until then the nationwide first panda offspring had grown up behind the scenes in the Berlin zoo.

AWARD-WINNING BEAR: A special kind of beauty contest: In the “Fat Bear” elections in Alaska, it is not the slim figure that counts, but exactly the opposite: the brown bear that weighs the most wins.

In 2020 the prize went to a massive brown bear with the number “747” and the nickname “Jumbo Jet”.

The exact weight of the 16-year-old male is not known, but last year the rangers estimated him to be a record 630 kilograms.

That summer, the bear ate so many salmon that its belly seemed to touch the ground, joked the animal keepers.

FAMOUS STREET CAT: A sad animal moment in 2020 was the death of probably the most famous street cat: Bob, the stray, died at the proud age of 14.

The story of the friendship between Bob and former drug addict James Bowen touched millions of people and went around the world.

The two helped each other out of a seemingly hopeless situation.

The ex-drug addict and street musician from London said he owed his life to the hangover.

Bob gave him "direction and meaning," said Bowen.

A book about this extraordinary friendship (“Bob the Stray”) had become a bestseller and was even made into a film.

PUMA BABY “CAPTAIN CAL” SURVIVES FIRE: Thick bandages cover the paws of the mountain lion baby, his whiskers are almost burned off, the light brown fur is scorched in some places.

But the little orphaned big cat with the nickname "Captain Cal" probably had a guardian angel in the middle of the inferno of the so-called Zogg Fire in October in Northern California.

A firefighter discovered the four to six weeks old, badly injured baby animal, which was then nursed at the Oakland Zoo.

COUNT BOBBY VON SONNENSCHEIN: Pig Bobby has a strong will: when he was supposed to be slaughtered, he vehemently defended himself - slipped away from the farmers or even knocked them over.

He managed to escape three times, and so he was allowed to stay alive.

The angler saddle pig, whose full name is Graf Bobby von Sonnenschein, even has its own Instagram account - which now has more than 5000 subscribers.
