Munich (dpa) - Like so many other things, the sporting year 2020 was dominated by Corona.

The pandemic initially caused a worldwide lockdown, after which many restrictions remained.

Because of or despite Corona, the exceptional year produced winners and losers.

A selection:

WINNER

FC BAYERN: The triple of championship, cup win and Champions League, plus the honors for Robert Lewandowski as world footballer and Manuel Neuer as world goalkeeper: You can hardly win more than Bayern, who are going into the new year as “Christmas champions”.

CHRISTIAN SEIFERT: Under the direction of the DFL managing director, the Bundesliga can start with an extensive concept as the first major league worldwide after Corona.

Your example catches on.

As a crisis manager, Seifert also scores with social prudence.

LEON DRAISAITL: The Cologne ice hockey star is voted top scorer in the NHL and also voted Most Valuable Player (MVP).

This combination has never been achieved by any German in one of the major US leagues.

To top it off, there is now the award for “Sportsman of the Year”.

KARL GEIGER: With third place in the Four Hills Tournament, then four World Cup victories, second place in the overall World Cup and after the long Corona break in December, the sensational world title in ski flying, Geiger is the best Nordic skier.

ALBA BERLIN: Bamberg and Bavaria have been fighting for the basketball championship among themselves since 2010.

In the unique Corona tournament just in Munich, however, the Berliners cannot be beaten and for the first time since 2008 they deserved the Bundesliga title again.

MICK SCHUMACHER: The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher always carries the burden of his surname with him.

But so far he has not been crushed by that.

After winning the title in Formula 2, he gets a starting place for Formula 1 in the new year.

SATOU SABALLY: The basketball player is selected second in the draft, the annual talent draw, by the Dallas Wings.

This is a German record in a US professional league.

In times of “Black Lives Matter” she is also strongly committed to combating racism.

JÜRGEN KLOPP: The coach is leading Liverpool FC back to the championship after 30 years of waiting.

The early exit in the Champions League as defending champion is forgotten.

In the election for FIFA world coach, he then surprisingly prevailed against Bavaria's Hansi Flick.

MALAIKA MIHAMBO: The best long jumper in the world was the top favorite for Olympic gold in Tokyo - the coup should now be made up in 2021.

As the best in the world of the year at 7.03 meters, she is named “Sportswoman of the Year” for the second time in a series and is very committed to charities.

SOPHIA POPOV: With her victory at the British Open, Popov is writing golf history as the first German winner of a major.

It also provides one of the most emotional sporting moments of the year when she bursts into tears of joy before the last putt.

LOSER

FANS: After weeks and months of compulsory breaks, professional sports are mostly back in business.

Only fans have to stay outside in the stadiums and halls, with a few exceptions.

The mood is suffering tremendously - and a fan comeback is currently not in sight.

AMATEUR SPORTS: The professionals are allowed to do their work even in pandemic times.

In popular sport, however, the consequences of the pandemic are brutal.

Clubs fight for survival.

In addition, there is growing concern about the long-term consequences for children and adolescents who lack exercise.

SEBASTIAN VETTEL: The motorsport marriage between the Formula 1 star and Scuderia Ferrari will be divorced.

Even in the last year together, the longed-for World Cup success did not succeed - on the contrary!

Vettel is brutally suspended in the red bolide and only comes on the podium once.

SCHALKE 04: Just two years after the runner-up championship, Schalke is on the ground and will be bottom of the table in 2021. In desperation, former coach Stevens is reactivated.

The meat scandal surrounding supervisory board chief Tönnies is added;

the manager resigns.

JOACHIM LÖW: Football Germany's doubts about the national coach are growing.

After the 6-0 debacle in Spain, many are calling for the World Cup coach to be kicked out, Löw himself does not comment for days.

He is allowed to stay, but goes into the European Championship year very weak.

LUCIEN FAVRE: With Borussia Dortmund, the Swiss is again second in the Bundesliga behind Bayern, but he still does not know how to convince in the Ruhr area in his second year.

After a 5-1 home disgrace against Stuttgart, he has to leave in December.

JÜRGEN KLINSMANN: Even the 1990 world champion fails as a trainer - and how!

He should lead Hertha BSC to the top.

After two and a half months he throws down, snubbering the club and the investor.

Later even offensive notes about employees become public.

SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS: A tax raid and reports about the possibly bought 2006 World Cup caused a sensation in the DFB.

In addition, there is criticism of the leadership of the association around President Keller.

In speed skating, there are major eddies and a number of personnel changes under the new president.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV: The tennis professional is making it to the finals of the US Open and has never gone so far in a Grand Slam.

Other moments will be remembered, especially parties in Corona times, such as the Adria Tour and France.

He denies the ex-girlfriend's violence.

ANTI-DOPING FIGHT: Due to the restrictions in Corona times, inspectors can only work to a very limited extent.

In the criminal case against the doctor Mark S. no new perpetrators come out.

And the halving of the lock against Russia by the CAS is also shocking in Germany.
