Cologne (dpa) - When it comes to Christmas sweets, adults in Germany have clear favorites and dislikes.

According to a recent representative survey, the most controversial holiday baked goods are Christmas stollen and cinnamon stars, the most popular are gingerbread and speculoos.

54 percent of adults in Germany say they like gingerbread.

50 percent say this with speculoos.

In contrast, it is only 39 percent for Christmas stollen and only 33 percent for cinnamon stars.

The group of those who (at all) do not like this is also the largest here: 38 percent do not like cinnamon stars, 37 percent do not like stollen.

With all of these sweets, a relatively large group between 20 and 30 percent say that they only like them as “medium”.

On behalf of the German Press Agency, the opinion research institute Yougov surveyed almost 2,100 people aged 18 and over a few days before Christmas.

In comparison, cinnamon stars are particularly popular in Hesse, where 40 percent say they like them.

In contrast, they are particularly unpopular in Saarland and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Stollen is particularly popular in Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and of course Saxony, Spekulatius also in Brandenburg, while gingerbread is particularly popular in Bremen and Bavaria.

Men prefer stollen to women (43 versus 35 percent), while cinnamon stars are somewhat more popular with women (35 versus 31 percent).

When it comes to speculoos and gingerbread, the sexes largely agree.

According to the survey, one in three women does not like marzipan, and slightly less for men (29 instead of 33 percent).

Amazingly, given the presence in advertising: more than one in four adults does not like chocolate Santa Clauses.

Especially older people (55 and over) do not like the confectionery, which is called "hollow chocolate figures" in technical jargon.

In this age group, only one in three (32 percent) says they like to eat it.

For younger people it is almost half (47 percent for 18 to 24 year olds and even 49 percent for 25 to 34 year olds and 35 to 44 year olds).

As expected, the most noticeable east-west difference is with the Christstollen, whose stronghold is Dresden.

46 percent in the east say they are tunnel lovers, in the west only 37 percent.
