Munich / Würzburg (dpa / lby) - The churches in Bavaria are celebrating Christmas this year with digital church services and Christmas masses under strict conditions.
The celebrations take place in the afternoon or in the early evening, sometimes in the open air.
Many are broadcast live on the Internet, on the radio or on television so that as many believers as possible can participate at least from home.
Ironically, there will be no late evening Christmas mass or midnight mass in Christian Bavaria this year: Church-goers have to be home by 9 p.m. at the latest - because from then on there is a so-called curfew throughout Bavaria until 5 a.m.
During these tightened exit restrictions, only those who have a really valid reason, such as a medical emergency, are allowed to be on the street.
The ecumenical Christmas service with Regional Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm and Cardinal Reinhard Marx is to be celebrated today at 4 p.m. in the youth church “Vom Gute Hirten” in Munich-Haidhausen.
It is broadcast live on the internet.
The mass in Munich's Liebfrauendom with the Catholic Archbishop of Munich and Freising, Marx, is to be shown online from 7 p.m.

As a sign of hope, numerous Catholic and Protestant parishes also want to ring the bells today at 10 p.m. in Bavaria.
Regional Bishop Bedford-Strohm also preaches on the morning of the first holiday in the Munich Church of St. Matthew.
On Christmas Eve at 8.10 p.m., ARD also broadcasts “Das Wort zum Christmas Eve”, a five-minute ecumenical address by Bedford-Strohm, who is also chairman of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), and Bishop Georg Bätzing, chairman of the German Bishops' Conference .
