A US official said that Indonesia could obtain billions of dollars in additional funds from the United States if it joined the efforts of outgoing US President Donald Trump to establish relations between Israel and Islamic countries.

And Bloomberg News quoted Adam Buehler, CEO of USAID, as saying that the agency could double its investments in Indonesia, which currently amount to about one billion dollars, if Jakarta establishes diplomatic relations with Israel.

He added in an interview with Bloomberg in occupied Jerusalem, "We are talking to them (Indonesia) about this matter ... if they are ready for that, we will be happy to provide them with more financial support than we actually do."

The US official said he would not be surprised if the assistance provided by the US Agency for International Development to Indonesia - the most populous Muslim country - increased by one or two billion dollars if the latter established diplomatic relations with Israel.

The leaders of the United States and Israel say that they expect more countries to join the wave of agreements to normalize relations with Israel, which announced over the past few months that the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco will join them.

The United States hopes that Oman and Saudi Arabia will join the wave of normalization of relations with Israel, although Buehler said that it is difficult to provide assistance from the US Agency for International Development to the two countries because of the rules that do not allow the agency to invest in high-income countries.
