Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - According to the union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), mass layoffs of Lufthansa pilots are off the table for the time being.

The airline, which was hard hit by the Corona crisis, and the VC agreed on a longer-term crisis collective agreement until at least the end of March 2022, as the union announced.

Lufthansa confirmed the agreement.

According to Cockpit, short-time work for pilots will be extended until the end of 2021.

In return, according to the union, the pilots will receive dismissal protection until the end of the crisis agreement, which the group can extend until the end of June 2022.

In addition, there is a pot filled with 24 million euros to finance socially acceptable measures in the event of staff cuts.

The union put the pilots' savings contribution at up to more than 450 million euros.

Together with the package that has already been closed for 2020, savings totaling more than 600 million euros would result.

Initially, there was only one agreement with the pilots union until the end of this year.

Lufthansa had announced that without an agreement, around 500 captains and 500 first officers would have to leave the company in the second quarter of 2021.

That would be around 20 percent of the team.

The airline, battered by the Corona crisis, had already agreed on cuts with the flight attendants' union Ufo and the service union Verdi.

Lufthansa, which was rescued by the state, made a loss of 5.6 billion euros in the first nine months of the year and cut its flight offer due to the extensive travel restrictions.
