Zwickau (dpa / sn) - The left have demanded better compensation for work on Sundays and public holidays.

By no means all employees would receive material compensation for this, said Sabine Zimmermann, member of the Bundestag from Zwickau, on Wednesday: “Many collective agreements provide for surcharges.

However, collective agreements apply to fewer and fewer employees.

The federal government must take measures to strengthen collective agreements and, above all, make them easier to apply. "

In the Basic Law it is clearly stated that Sundays and public holidays are to be protected as days of rest from work, the politician emphasized: “The Federal Government must use its possibilities to restrict the numerous exceptions under the Working Hours Act.

Work on Sundays and public holidays must be limited to what is necessary. "

In many cases, however, they cannot be avoided, for example in the area of social services and public services.

The corona pandemic clearly shows that these activities urgently need to be upgraded.

According to statistics, a fifth of all dependent employees in Saxony (20.5 percent) worked on Sundays and / or public holidays in 2019.

In total, this affected 367,000 women and men.

244,000 of them had to work regularly on these days, 123,000 occasionally.
