Kassel (dpa) - The potash group K + S will be able to dispose of salt wastewater in Werra and Weser in the coming year.

The regional council of Kassel granted the company a corresponding discharge permit for the coming year.

However, there are stricter limit values for chloride.

The permit is good news for the employees in the Hessian-Thuringian potash district, said K + S boss Burkhard Lohr on Wednesday: “It shows that our extensive investments and measures to further relieve the environment are recognized and will continue to be an incentive to do more in the future To initiate improvements. "

The approval is of considerable economic importance for K + S.

Production in the potash district depends on the disposal of wastewater.

The Werra, which flows into the Weser, is an important route.

The introduction is criticized by environmentalists, however, because of the serious consequences for ecosystems and drinking water.

The discharge limit values are disputed between the company and the countries bordering the Werra and Weser.

K + S had announced that it would not be able to comply with the lower values agreed with politicians and pointed out that 5,300 jobs were directly linked to production in the Werra region.

The new permit now includes a moderate lowering of the limit value for chloride from 2500 to 2400 milligrams per liter of water.

This means that an already planned reduction in the salt concentration in the rivers has been brought forward by one year, explained K + S.

A decision on the introduction in the years 2022 to 2027 should be made in the coming year, when the neighboring countries in the Weser river basin community have decided on a new management plan for the river.

This will also deal with the issue of limit values.
