Italy on Wednesday 23 December reported 553 additional deaths from the new coronavirus, exceeding the threshold of 70,000 deaths in the country, a record in the EU.

Italy, the first European country struck by the coronavirus, becomes the fifth country in the world and the first country in Europe in terms of death toll with 70,395 deaths due to COVID-19 since the start of the epidemic.

The Italian Ministry of Health also identified 14,522 new infections with the coronavirus on Wednesday in the space of 24 hours, against 13,318 cases the day before.

The contamination toll now stands at 1.991 million.

Complaint against the Italian State

Around 500 families of victims of the Covid-19 pandemic will file a civil complaint and claim one hundred million euros from the Italian state suspected of serious omissions in the management of the crisis, media reported on Wednesday.

The complaint targets the head of government Giuseppe Conte, the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza and Attilio Fontana, president of Lombardy, the region most affected by the pandemic with nearly 25,000 deaths recorded since February.

This civil complaint follows about 300 criminal complaints, according to an association of relatives of the victims at the origin of these legal proceedings, the "Noi denunceremo" Committee (we will denounce), filed in recent months, mainly with the Bergamo parquet (north).
