Munich (dpa) - Caregiving relatives in Bavaria will be given a million FFP2 masks free of charge at the beginning of January.

"In addition to our support services for people in need of care, visitors and staff in inpatient facilities, we will also increasingly focus on caring relatives," said State Secretary for Health Klaus Holetschek (CSU) in Munich on Wednesday.

Around 76 percent of people in need of care in Bavaria are currently cared for at home, around 47 percent of around 400,000 people in need of care exclusively by relatives.

"We must also protect these people and their relatives in need of care from infection with the life-threatening coronavirus," said Holetschek. That is why the Ministry of Health distributes the FFP2 masks for caregivers. The protective masks came from the Bavarian pandemic central warehouse, which will be replenished accordingly through replacement purchases.
