Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The Bundeswehr will continue to expand its aid to contain the corona pandemic in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

As a spokesman for the state command in Schwerin said, there are applications from several districts for support with the corona rapid tests in nursing homes.

Soldiers could also be deployed there over the holidays.

The prescribed rapid tests for visitors are intended to ensure that, even with the currently high number of infections, home residents can meet at least one relative regularly.

However, a negative corona test is required.

The residents themselves and the nursing staff should also be tested continuously.

The country had ordered 400,000 of these tests, of which, according to Social Affairs Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD), half had already been delivered.

The operators of the homes had referred to the increased personnel costs for the tests and asked for help.

According to the state command, paramedics of the Bundeswehr will also form mobile vaccination teams that will carry out the corona vaccinations in the nursing homes from Sunday.

The residents, who are often over 80 years old, are first cared for because they are particularly susceptible to the most severe courses of illness and even death in the event of a corona infection.

Most recently, there had been serious virus entries in several nursing homes in the country, including in Güstrow, Schwerin, Woldegk, Friedland and Zempin on Usedom.

According to the state command, after the start of inpatient vaccinations in early 2021, the Bundeswehr will take over the operation of the vaccination center in Pasewalk (Vorpommern-Greifswald district).

For this purpose, 25 members of the army are initially planned.

Nationwide, more than 200 soldiers are expected to be deployed to Corona, including in the health departments of the districts that also organize contact tracking.

According to the Bundeswehr, up to 20,000 soldiers are available for support services throughout Germany.

They usually act at the request of local authorities.
