Regensburg (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's university hospitals continue to need blood plasma donations to treat Covid 19 patients.

In April, the hospitals first asked for the help of people who had survived an infection with the coronavirus and developed immunization.

Antibodies from their blood should be given to those Covid 19 sufferers in whose blood no antibodies had formed.

A few months later, medical professionals are cautiously optimistic about how this method works.

Around 90 people have been treated with the method at the Regensburg University Hospital since spring.

Blood plasma donations are still needed, in some cases more than during the first corona wave, says Robert Offner, head of transfusion medicine at the Regensburg University Hospital.

"The need, however, fluctuates, it depends on the severity of the Covid-19 patients admitted."

The Bavarian university clinics help each other out when there is an urgent need for plasma, as the senior doctor says.

Transfusion medicine is currently working closely with around a dozen donors who donate regularly.

New donors who don’t just want to donate once are still welcome.
