Stralsund (dpa / mv) - The Hanseatic city of Stralsund will ban the feeding of seagulls from 2021.

As a city spokesman said on Tuesday, the ban will apply from January 1st at the city harbor, on the Sundpromenade, in the lido and on the ponds around the old town.

The city's ordinance goes back to a resolution passed by city officials in August.

The reason was increasing complaints from the population.

The feeding, mostly of tourists, makes seagulls increasingly aggressive and outrageous, explained the city spokesman.

Such birds would find sufficient food in nature even without feeding.

Similar bans already exist in Wismar and Warnemünde.

In addition, the waters suffered from the oversupply of nutrients for water birds, which is already noted on information boards around the old town.

The feeding ban was agreed with the Schwerin Ministry of the Interior.

In the event of violations, this is considered an administrative offense, which can be punished with a fine of up to 5000 euros.
