Mainz (dpa) - ZDF director Thomas Bellut has taken note of the Federal Constitutional Court's rejection of the urgent application to block the broadcast and at the same time sees an encouraging point.

At the request of the German Press Agency, the director announced on Tuesday: “ZDF has taken note of the urgent decision of the Federal Constitutional Court and is waiting for the main proceedings.

It is encouraging to note in the justification that a violation of the freedom of broadcasting is possible in light of previous case law. "

Previously, the Federal Constitutional Court had rejected urgent applications from ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio against the blockade of the increase in the broadcasting fee by Saxony-Anhalt.

The monthly contribution was originally supposed to increase from 17.50 euros to 18.36 euros on January 1, 2021.

15 federal states have agreed to block Saxony-Anhalt.

This means that the corresponding international treaty cannot come into force.

In the actual proceedings on the constitutional complaints, the judges will judge later, the urgent motions were upstream.

In its decision on Tuesday, the court also stated that the constitutional complaints were “neither obviously inadmissible nor obviously unfounded”.

In view of the previous case law, a violation of the freedom of broadcasting protected by the Basic Law appears “at least possible”.
