China News Service, December 22. According to the South American Overseas Chinese News Network, the consulting agency CAUSE and the polling agency IDEIA interviewed 1,200 people in Brazil between December 15 and 17 and the results showed that the new crown pneumonia epidemic caused a heavy burden. In this year of loss, most Brazilians chose the term "mourning" (luto) to define 2020.

According to reports, the survey showed that 31% of the respondents chose "mourning" as the word of the year, followed by "isolamento" (24%) and "resistência" (14%).

"This is a year of heavy losses. It's not just family and friends who will mourn those who lost their lives in COVID-19," said Leandro Machado, a partner and political scientist at CAUSE. "We have lost our social coexistence. And for many people, they have also lost employment and income. This is a very serious matter."

The southeastern part of Brazil, which is the area where most of the country’s new crown cases are concentrated, feels “mourning” the most. 39% of the respondents chose this term to define 2020.

In addition, the proportion of people who have not completed high school education (36%) and whose income is less than one month's minimum wage (35%) choose "mourning" is also higher.

This is no coincidence, because this part of the population is most affected by the new crown pneumonia epidemic.

This is the fifth year CAUSE and IDEIA have tried to define Brazilians.

In 2019, the word of the year chosen by Brazilians is "difficulty" (dificuldade), and in 2018 it is "change" (mudança).
