Dresden (AP) - Playful class beats great fighting spirit: Dynamo Dresden has clearly missed the next surprise in the DFB Cup.

The third division soccer team lost 0: 3 (0: 1) on Tuesday against SV Darmstadt 98, who played a class higher, and were eliminated in the second round.

Fabian Schnellhardt (24th minute), Seungho Paik (59th) and Serdar Dursun (72nd) caused Dresden's defeat, with which the Saxons also missed the 700,000 euro bonus for making it into the round of 16.

Even before kick-off, Dynamo had suffered an emotional setback.

The 30,000 balloons in the main stand, which were supposed to symbolize the missing fans in the empty stadium, had to be almost completely removed.

Due to strong winds with speeds of sometimes over 50 km / h, more and more balloons were loosened from their anchors on the seats and could thus get onto the lawn in an uncontrolled manner, the club said.

Dresden had sold over 72,000 ghost tickets for the game.

A class difference quickly became apparent on the pitch.

Dynamo willingly gave Darmstadt the ball, just stood in the back.

In the first half alone, the guests had almost 75 percent possession.

However, Dresden had the first chance.

Patrick Weihrauch (17th) penetrated the penalty area after a counterattack, but his shot was blocked.

Then it became dangerous for Dresden when Marvin Mehlem (19th) shot just next to the goal after a remarkable combination.

Schnellhardt did better shortly afterwards.

A ball fended off by Dynamo fell in front of the midfielder's feet and he pulled off brutally from a good 20 meters.

The ball slammed from the lower edge of the bar into the goal, Dynamo keeper Kevin Broll had no chance.

Dresden no longer had a game, but had opportunities.

Philipp Hosiner's (36th) conclusion was too central, however, Robin Becker's header (45th) landed after a corner next to the goal.

After the move, Dynamo finally got bolder and played more determinedly forward.

But Darmstadt had a great chance for a second goal.

Dursun (54th) missed the Dresdner box with his header by just inches.

The second Darmstadt Gate, however, was only postponed.

Paik completed after a one-two, Broll had no chance again.

Shortly afterwards, Dresden also had to replace the possibly more seriously injured central defender Tim Knipping.

Dresden fought doggedly to catch up, but there was a lack of both playful and physical means.

Instead, Dursun made everything clear from close range.
