Osnabrück (dpa) - A baby elephant was born in the zoo in Osnabrück.

The birth was unproblematic, said a zoo keeper on Tuesday.

The Asian bull elephant, baptized Yaro, and his mother are doing well.

His weight was about 100 kilograms at birth.

He was immediately taken up by the herd.

It is the first baby elephant to be conceived in the Osnabrück Zoo.

His mother Douanita had offspring for the sixth time and is already an experienced elephant cow.

The Indian name Yaro means something like "the beloved son".

The zookeepers had been expecting the birth for several days.

Douanita was constantly monitored by camera.

On Monday night the time had come.

At the moment, Yaro drinks and sleeps a lot.

But again and again he also explores his surroundings, they said.

Another birth is soon on the agenda at Osnabrück Zoo, because Douanita's daughter Sita is also heavily pregnant.

Zoo keepers expect the birth in January or February.
