Bad Gottleuba (dpa / sn) - During controls on Autobahn 17 near Bad Gottleuba (Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district), the federal police seized eight smuggled puppies over the weekend.

The dogs are presumably younger than three months, and the drivers could not produce any papers for the animals, as the federal police announced on Monday.

After consulting the responsible veterinary office, the dogs were handed over to the care of an animal shelter.

An investigation was initiated against the transporters of the dogs on suspicion of violating the Animal Welfare Act.
