Berlin (dpa / bb) - Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited one of the six vaccination centers in the capital in the Berlin district of Alt-Treptow on Monday, which are intended for the corona mass vaccinations.

"Today is a crucial day in the fight against the coronavirus," said Steinmeier after his tour of the vaccination center in the Treptow arena with a view to the announced decision of the European Medicines Agency on the approval of the first vaccine to be used in the European Union .

The current situation is difficult given the high number of infections, said Steinmeier.

"But today is also a day of hope, because when the vaccination begins, the light at the end of the tunnel becomes a little brighter."

At the same time, the head of state warned to remain cautious: “We must be considerate, we must continue to observe the hygiene measures.

Only if we do not overload the capacities of the hospitals will we actually continue to fight the virus and, above all, care for the sick. "

The Federal President was guided through the vaccination center by the project manager for the new vaccination centers, Albrecht Broemme.

Broemme had already set up the treatment center for Covid 19 patients on the exhibition grounds in the spring.
