Erfurt (dpa / th) - After weeks of tug-of-war, the dice are falling on Thuringia's budget for 2021. The state parliament is meeting today for a special session to finally discuss and decide on the figures.

The state budget, which is before parliament, has a record volume of almost twelve billion euros.

According to Finance Minister Heike Taubert (SPD), Thuringia has to use up its reserves from previous years amounting to 1.2 billion euros and take out loans amounting to 288 million euros to finance the expenses.

The government's draft budget, which was presented in the autumn, had a volume of 11.4 billion euros.

The six parliamentary groups saw a significant need for correction and submitted around 900 amendments.

The significantly higher expenses than planned by the government result mainly from better pay for primary school teachers, additional jobs in schools and the police, more money for local authorities and the introduction of a master start-up bonus.

The red-red-green minority coalition and the opposition CDU parliamentary group agreed on this.

Overall, Thuringia will take on new debts of almost 1.6 billion euros this year and next in order to compensate for loss of income due to the corona pandemic and additional expenditure.
