Oslo (AP) - The former Norwegian cross-country skier Petter Northug was sentenced to seven months in prison by an Oslo court on Monday.

He also has to surrender his driver's license forever.

The 34-year-old admitted that he drove too fast several times and stored drugs.

Northug accepted the verdict, his lawyer said.

Northug had been stopped by the police in August for driving too fast.

During a raid, the police found six grams of cocaine and 0.6 grams of MDMA in his apartment.

Initial assumptions that he had driven under the influence of drugs had not been confirmed.

In the opinion of the court, it was particularly serious that Northug had driven extremely too fast four times, three times faster than 200 kilometers per hour in an 80 zone.

In doing so, he put his life and the lives of others in unnecessary danger.

The fact that he filmed himself doing it and sent these films to his friends could incite others to do similar things, the judge said.

Northug had previously admitted that he had one hand on the steering wheel during these trips and filmed with the right hand on the cell phone.

He also overtook other vehicles.

The two-time Olympic champion had only got his driver's license back in May 2019 after he had been sentenced to an ankle-shackle sentence for driving in alcohol and driving and hacking.

In August he admitted at a press conference that he had a drug problem.
