Berlin (dpa) - Three handball players from Bundesliga club MT Melsungen have tested positive for the corona virus.

As the club announced on Monday, the national players Silvio Heinevetter and Timo Kastening as well as Yves Kunkel had positive results.

These were confirmed in a further test in the evening.

All MT players then went into domestic isolation.

A new date must now be found for the Bundesliga home game against TVB Stuttgart scheduled for Tuesday.

With regard to the away game on December 26th at the Owls in Ludwigshafen, the club is in coordination with the health department.

However, it is to be feared that this game cannot take place either, according to MT Melsungen.

“This is a real shock for the players, for the team and for the club,” said MT board member Axel Geerken, “especially against the backdrop of the coronavirus events in our country in recent weeks.

We are not thinking at all about how we will continue in the league, but the most important thing is that the players affected relax and recover completely.

They are currently experiencing maximally mild symptoms, ”he said.

The preparation of the German handball selection for the World Cup from January 13th to 31st in Egypt is also badly affected by the news.

In the 20-person World Cup squad announced by the German Handball Federation on Monday, Silvio Heinevetter and Tim Kastening are the two Melsungers who tested positive, as well as three other MT players in Kai Häfner, Tobias Reichmann and Julius Kühn.

MT captain Finn Lemke had already been infected with the virus in mid-November.

The entire team then had to go into a fourteen-day quarantine.

Lemke had canceled his participation in the World Cup last week.
