Westensee (dpa) - When trying to anchor a Christmas tree floating on a lake in Schleswig-Holstein, two canoeists capsized - one of the two has been missing since then.

The 39-year-old and his 47-year-old passenger were on the Bosseer Schoor, a tributary of the Westensee (Rendsburg-Eckernförde district), when they capsized, the fire brigade announced.

The 47-year-old was able to swim to the shore, but his passenger never reappeared.

According to a police spokesman, they wanted to anchor a floating Christmas tree to the bottom of the water.

Around 90 rescue workers searched for the 39-year-old with several sonar boats, divers, drones and helicopters with thermal imaging cameras until late in the evening - but unsuccessfully.

The search was stopped during the night.

If there are indications that the man could still be found, a decision may be made to resume the search, said the police spokesman.
