Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The state of North Rhine-Westphalia will fund the renovation of the rail infrastructure of non-federally owned railways with around 1.75 million euros.

"We bring more freight traffic from the road to the rails," said Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) on Sunday.

With the funding, more logistics locations, industrial and commercial areas could be connected to the rail network over the last mile and tens of thousands of truck trips could be avoided each year.

A good one million euros go to Lappwaldbahn Service-GmbH alone, among other things for the renewal of track systems in Lienen station and the expansion of four level crossings in the route network.

Kai Uwe Ebert, Managing Director of Lappwaldbahn, emphasized that with the renovation of the twelve-kilometer-long Lengerich - Bad Iburg section, the Teutoburg Forest Railway between Gütersloh and Lengerich can again be used for heavy goods traffic.

This will make the route a link between East Westphalia and the whole of northern Germany including the German seaports.

A good 400,000 euros go to the Mindener Kreisbahnen for the renewal of track systems on the Mittelland Canal Bridge and in Minden train station, among others.

Another 330,000 euros go to the Rhein-Sieg transport company.

The funding program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia was reintroduced in mid-2018.

The aim is to connect more industrial and commercial areas as well as logistics locations to the main lines of the railway.

According to the state government, over 80 measures in North Rhine-Westphalia have already received a total of around 16 million euros for the funding period 2018 to 2021.
