Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Data theft at ATMs in Hesse increased in 2020.
Between January and November inclusive, criminals manipulated ATMs in the country 31 times in order to steal card details and PINs from bank customers.
This has already exceeded the number for 2019 as a whole with 28 such skimming cases, although December is still missing from the statistics.
In the eleven months from January to November 2019, the Frankfurt facility Euro Kartensysteme counted 21 “skimming” attacks in Hesse.
Individual machines can be hit several times.
In a comparison of the 16 federal states, Hessen has the second highest number of cases.
According to the information, the highest number of cases nationwide in the current year have been in North Rhine-Westphalia (44), while Lower Saxony is in third place with 16 cases. In total, 134 attempts at skimming at ATMs have been registered in Germany this year.
From January up to and including November 2019 there were 227, and then 245 for 2019 as a whole.

The damage caused by data theft at ATMs in Germany has continued to decline at a low level in the current year.
Euro card systems put the gross amount of damage from “skimming” up to and including November at just over a million euros.
This is a record low, said the institution that takes care of the security management for payment cards on behalf of the German credit industry.
Consumers in Germany who have become victims of “skimming” normally do not have to fear any financial disadvantage.
As a rule, financial institutions compensate for such damage - provided that customers have handled their bank card and PIN carefully.
