Journalists and activists on social media said that Egyptian security forces arrested veteran journalist Amer Abdel Moneim from his home on Saturday evening, without explaining the reasons.

The Egyptian authorities have not announced the reasons for Abdel Moneim's arrest, but journalists usually face repeated charges such as spreading false news, misusing social media sites and spreading rumors. Some of them may even face a recurring charge of joining a "terrorist group or assisting it in carrying out its purposes."

Journalists demanded their union to quickly intervene in defense of Amer Abdel Moneim, an old member of the Syndicate, and not to remain silent about the continued arrest of journalists, especially since Abdel Moneim suffers from diabetes as well as severe vision impairment, as he recently had surgery on his eye.

The arrest of respected journalist Amer Abdel Moneim from his home in Cairo is part of a state of deepening hostility to the Sisi regime against the press and journalists. It is worth noting that Amer Abdel Moneim is an independent Egyptian journalist, who previously worked as assistant editor of the newspaper Al-Shaab published by the Labor Party, which was the most prominent Egyptian opposition newspaper, and was suspended by the authorities of the late President Hosni Mubarak at the beginning of the current millennium.

Amer belongs to the Islamic trend in Egypt and is considered one of the most prominent Islamic journalists, but he did not belong to any faction, political organization or advocacy, and he maintained his independence and work as a freelance writer and journalist, and recently devoted himself to writing articles and in-depth research on Egyptian, Arab and Islamic affairs, as well as writings on international politics. .

Abdel Moneim was arrested 30 years ago at the beginning of his journalism career, and he was also subjected to security harassment after the military coup led by the current president, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, in the summer of 2013 when he was defense minister.

The Journalists' Movement Against the Military Coup condemned what it described as the crime of arresting Abdel Moneim, and said it was based on the law of the jungle, and called on the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate to defend its members, and called on journalists and jurists around the world to show solidarity with Abdel Moneim.

The security forces have arrested the writer, journalist and Islamic thinker, the great brother and friend, Professor Amer Abdel Moneim, son of Al-Shaab newspaper, and the most prominent journalists in it, for expressing his point of view on communication sites.

Skyline International condemned the arrest of Abdel Moneim and demanded the immediate release, and the Stockholm-based human rights organization said in a press statement that it had received statements of the arrest of Abdel Moneim at dawn yesterday, Saturday, December 19, in an arbitrary and without legal basis.

Skyline calls for the immediate release of the journalist Abdel Moneim and the guarantee of fair and transparent judicial procedures for him, in accordance with Egypt's obligations towards international laws and legislation, and to ensure protection of the right to freedom of expression.

She emphasized that international charters and agreements guarantee the right to freedom of expression and the press, noting that Abdel Moneim's arrest coincided with a government move to amend a law allowing the imprisonment of journalists, revealed by the spokesperson of the Egyptian Cabinet.

The latter revealed that the government intends to amend an article in the Penal Code that "permits imprisonment for a period of no less than one year and a fine of not less than 100,000 pounds and not more than 200,000 or one of these two penalties in the case of filming or broadcasting court sessions."

Since the military coup, the Egyptian authorities have expanded in detaining journalists, which prompted Reporters Without Borders to consider Egypt one of the largest prisons for journalists in the region, and a report by the organization issued in mid-2020, ranked 166th in the world on freedom of the press.

According to unofficial estimates, more than 80 journalists are in prison.

A few months ago, it was noticeable that the former president of the Supreme Council for Media, Makram Muhammad Ahmed, who is close to former President Hosni Mubarak and the current Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, launched a sharp and rare attack on the state's policy towards the media, accusing the regime of silencing and suppressing freedoms, pointing out that newspapers are issued in Egypt for one reader, who is President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
