Frankfurt / Main / Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The data theft at ATMs in Brandenburg remains at a very low level.

In one case, criminals manipulated an ATM in the country from January up to and including November of this year in order to steal card details and PINs from bank customers, according to figures from the Frankfurt facility, Euro Card Systems.

In the comparable period of 2019, a “skimming” attack was also counted in Brandenburg.

According to the information, the most cases nationwide were in North Rhine-Westphalia with 44 in the current year until November.

Nationwide, the damage from data theft at ATMs in Germany continued to decline at a low level in the current year.

Euro card systems put the gross amount of damage from “skimming” up to and including November at just over a million euros.

This is a record low, said the institution that takes care of the security management for payment cards on behalf of the German credit industry.

As a rule, financial institutions compensate for such damage - provided that customers have handled their bank card and PIN carefully.
