Hochfilzen (dpa) - The winter sports program on the last Saturday before Christmas Eve is lavish.

In Switzerland, ski jumpers are out and about on the large hill.

The last biathlon pursuit races of the year are on the program in Austria.

In Dresden and Winterberg, cross-country skiers and tobogganers fight for World Cup points.

And the first downhill classic for alpine skiers is rising in Italy.

Without ski flying world champion Karl Geiger, who is in quarantine after a positive corona test, the German ski jumpers will compete in the dress rehearsal for the Four Hills Tournament in Engelberg.

In the absence of the 27-year-old from Oberstdorf, Markus Eisenbichler is the great German hope.

David Siegel is celebrating his debut after a break of almost two years in the World Cup.

He missed the previous season because of a torn cruciate ligament.

"For David this is another important step on the way back to the World Cup after his injury," said national coach Stefan Horngacher.

"We will give him the time he needs to regain competitive practice at the highest competition level."

3 p.m .: Ladies pursuit, 10 kilometers (ARD and Eurosport)

At the biathlon world cup in Hochfilzen there are two pursuit races.

From the German team, Franziska Preuß has the best chances as sprint fourth.

«That is a great starting position.

I will attack fully, »says Preuss.

The German men, on the other hand, have to catch up a big gap.

With a gap of 1:31 minutes each, Olympic champion Arnd Peiffer and ex-world champion Benedikt Doll go on the hunt.

"Now it is important to do better in the pursuit," says ex-world champion Erik Lesser, who starts as 46th, 2:09 minutes behind winner Sturla Holm Laegreid.

In the men's sprint, the Norwegians took the first four places, in the women three Norwegians won.

After a break of almost three weeks, the combined athletes are challenged at their second World Cup station of the winter.

In Ruka, Finland, the German athletes headed by national coach Hermann Weinbuch got off to a good start with three podium places.

In Austria, Eric Frenzel, Fabian Rießle & Co. now want to step up.

"Many signs point to good competitions, we are happy that we finally have another competition," said Weinbuch.

The alpine ski aces are challenged on Saturday in the descent.

For the men, the greatest German hopes rest on Andreas Sander, who took a strong fifth place in the Super-G in Val Gardena on Friday and made it into the top ten for the third time in the third speed competition of this season.

Romed Baumann, who finished ninth on the first descent this winter last weekend in Val d'Isère, is also considered a contender for one of the top ranks.

In the women's category, Kira Weidle wants to improve her eleventh place from the previous day.

Cross-country skiing

World Cup in Dresden

10.30 a.m. Qualifications

1:25 p.m .: Freestyle sprint women and men, 1.3 kilometers (ARD and Eurosport)

At the first home World Cup of the World Cup winter, the German cross-country skiers are just outsiders.

This was shown by the previous sprint competitions in Kuusamo and Davos, where the DSV athletes had nothing to do with the decision.

On the 650 meter long artificial snow route on Dresden's Königsufer, however, an upward trend should take place and, if possible, partial results for the World Cup norm should be obtained.

Given the lack of top sprinters, especially from Norway and Sweden, the chances are there.

The favorites for the women come from the USA, Russia and Slovenia, for the men from Italy, Russia and France.

The world champion duo Toni Eggert / Sascha Benecken would like to follow up with Oberhof's victory at the next home World Cup.

In the women's category, Natalie Geisenberger could secure victory as the third German athlete this season after Julia Taubitz and Dajana Eitberger.

He takes over the starting place from Christoph Hafer.

Record world champion Francesco Friedrich is fighting again for first place against the recently victorious Johannes Lochner.

SKICROSS

After their disappointing start to the season in Arosa in Switzerland, where they clearly missed the top places during the week, the German ski crossers want to do better at the second World Cup station in Val Thorens.
