Bern (dpa) - Switzerland has approved the corona vaccine developed by the Mainz-based company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer.

This is the world's first authorization in a regular procedure instead of an emergency authorization, announced the authorization authority Swissmedic in Bern.

The vaccine had been examined since mid-October with continuously submitted documents.

"The data available to date showed a comparable, high level of effectiveness in all age groups examined and met the requirements for safety," the authority explained.

The most frequently documented side effects are comparable to those of a flu vaccination.

"After a meticulous examination of the available information, Swissmedic comes to the conclusion that the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer / Biontech is safe."

The preparation from Biontech / Pfizer had been approved by emergency approval first in Great Britain and then in several other countries around the world since the beginning of December.

Canada, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Ecuador and Chile have now approved the vaccine.

The European Medicines Agency EMA gives its assessment of the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine this Monday.

Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) expects in his own words that the EU Commission will allow the serum on Tuesday.
