Val d'Isère (dpa) - Ski racer Kira Weidle narrowly missed the podium on the second descent of this winter in Val d'Isère.

Germany's best speed specialist finished fifth in the success of Olympic champion Sofia Goggia from Italy, 0.59 seconds behind.

It is the best World Cup result for the 24-year-old from Starnberg since her third place on the downhill run in Garmisch in January 2019 and her fourth best ever.

Second was downhill World Cup winner Corinne Suter from Switzerland (+ 0.24), who won the first race in the French Alps on Friday.

In third place went the surprisingly strong American Breezy Johnson (+ 0.27).

After several falls during the descent on Friday, which Weidle finished in eleventh place, the track was slightly defused.

There were therefore no further serious falls.
