Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Saddle of beef, roulade and roast duck with red cabbage: The around 1000 prisoners in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can look forward to special delicacies from the institutional kitchens on the Christmas holidays, even under Corona conditions.

In addition, the inmates of the correctional facilities (JVA) Stralsund and Neustrelitz can nibble self-baked cookies, as the Ministry of Justice in Schwerin announced.

As always, the wards in the institutions are decorated for Christmas, often with home-made decorations by the inmates.

Because of the risk of infection, some things are different than in previous years.

During visits there is always a partition between inmates and visitors, as they said.

In Stralsund and Neustrelitz, the prisoners now have the opportunity to skype, i.e. to talk to their relatives over the Internet with video.

In addition, small Christmas parties are planned in the individual detention houses and church services with few participants.

There are several of them for this: According to the ministry, there are 15 church services for the 390 prisoners of the Bützow prison alone.

Skat and sports tournaments are also planned in every prison, subject to strict hygiene rules.

Christmas parcel deliveries to the institutions are prohibited for security reasons, the ministry continues.

Small gift bags were distributed at the wards, and in Stralsund, on St. Nicholas Day, prisoners' shoes placed in front of the cell door were filled with a surprise.

Justice Minister Katy Hoffmeister (CDU) announced a visit to the Waldeck prison for Christmas Eve.

"In this extraordinary year, I would like to express my very special thanks to all the judiciary," she emphasized.
