The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Russia of being behind a widespread cyber attack on several US government agencies and other targets around the world.

The "Microsoft" group recently stated that it had informed more than 40 clients who were targeted with malware that security experts say could allow attackers unrestricted access to key government systems, electrical power grids, and other facilities.

Pompeo told the "The Mark Levin Show" program: "There were great efforts to use part of a third-party information program to insert a basic code into the US government systems. It was a very big attempt and I think we can now say very clearly that the Russians have engaged in this activity." .

Microsoft chief Brad Smith confirmed in a blog post that about 80% of affected customers are in the United States, along with others in other countries, including Belgium, Britain and Canada.

And the US National Security Agency called for raising the level of vigilance to prevent any unauthorized access to major military and civilian systems.

Analysts reported that the attacks posed a threat to US national security by infiltrating major government systems, while also creating risks related to controlling major infrastructure systems such as electric power grids and other facilities.

The US Agency for Electronic Security and Infrastructure Security stated that government agencies and important entities related to infrastructure and organizations in the private sector have previously been targeted by what it described as "an evolving and permanent threat."

While the agency did not specify who was behind the attack, private security companies pointed fingers at pirates with links to the Russian government.

US President-elect Joe Biden expressed his "grave concern" about the process, while Republican Senator Mitt Romney held Russia responsible and denounced what he described as "unjustifiable silence" on the part of the White House.

According to the US Agency for Electronic Security and Infrastructure Security, the attacks began in early March this year, and the party behind them showed "patience, operational security and advanced skill."

"This threat poses a great danger," the agency said, adding that it "expects that removing the threatening party from the environment that has been undermined will be a very complex and difficult process for organizations."
