Berlin (AP) - The victims of the Islamist terrorist attack on Berlin's Breitscheidplatz four years ago will be remembered with a silent commemoration tonight.

At 8:02 p.m. - the time of the attack - the church bells ring twelve times.

Despite the corona pandemic, a small prayer is planned in the Memorial Church.

The twelve dead are also commemorated with wreaths, flowers and candles.

The governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) has announced his arrival.

A rejected asylum seeker from Tunisia who was traveling in Germany with falsified identities shot and killed a truck driver in Berlin on December 19, 2016.

He killed eleven people with the stolen vehicle at the Christmas market, and dozen were injured.

The assassin fled to Italy, where he was shot a few days later during a police check.

The service will be broadcast on the Internet.

Relatives of the victims and other interested visitors can register for direct participation.

The Christmas market at the Memorial Church was banned due to the risk of infection.

Prime Minister Müller emphasized in advance that the attack was a “deep cut” that was burned into the memories of many people.

It could have happened to anyone.

"The terrorist threat is directed against us all."

The danger is still there, said Müller with a view to the recent attacks in France.

Meanwhile, Berlin's Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) presented an anti-terror plan on Friday.

This is intended to act more effectively against the threat of Islamist attacks.

The key points are better equipment for the police, closer observation of Islamists by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, deportations, strategies against radicalization and the rapid reaction of the police and rescue services in an emergency.

Repression and prevention should be more closely linked.
