Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The AfD is going with its parliamentary group leader Oliver Kirchner as the top candidate in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt.

The 54-year-old from Magdeburg received 361 of the 416 votes cast at a party conference on Saturday at the Magdeburg exhibition center.

This corresponds to an approval rate of 87 percent.

Kirchner had no opponent.

Like many functionaries and members in Saxony-Anhalt, he is assigned to the officially disbanded "wing" around the Thuringian AfD boss Björn Höcke.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the current as right-wing extremist.

The aim of the AfD is to deport all foreigners who are required to leave the country and to put more money into family support, said Kirchner.

Kirchner said no German couple should decide against having children for financial reasons.

The 54-year-old again stated that his goal would be for his party to become the strongest party in the next election or to win at least a quarter of the seats in parliament.

In the state elections in 2016, the AfD had almost 25 percent of the vote from a standing start and was the second strongest force behind the CDU of Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff in the state parliament.

It is the larger of the two opposition factions.

Despite strict contact restrictions to contain the corona pandemic, more than 400 AfD members came together on Saturday to prepare the list of applicants for the state elections until the evening.

The candidates for the federal election are to be elected on Sunday.

The current Corona rules explicitly allow the parties to hold their election campaigns.

Other parties had postponed their list elections because of the corona situation, the CDU already twice.

Controllers from the State Administration Office monitored compliance with the strict hygiene rules in the hall.
