5 female student citizens design a system for reusing car wash water

Dr. Munjid Maraqa: “Car washing is one of the most common uses that consume huge amounts of water.”

Five female students in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the College of Engineering at the United Arab Emirates University, namely: Al-Yazia Matar Al-Rumaithi, Shamma Muhammad Adhwa, Nouf Mubarak Al-Saadi, Sara Mansour Al-Shehhi, and Asia Abdullah Al-Qaidi, designed a system for preserving fresh water, and increasing the possibility of reusing water produced car wash.

The project was carried out in two phases, the first of which was to conduct a comprehensive theoretical review of the subject, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the opinions of vehicle owners and managers of vehicle washing facilities regarding the recycling of water resulting from car washing, and through this questionnaire a preliminary assessment of the economic, environmental and social aspects was developed and conducted. .

As for the second phase, it focused on collecting samples from car wash stations in Al Ain city, analyzing them to identify pollutants, and formulating alternative designs, as the survey showed that water consumption by one car wash station amounts to millions of liters annually, and through the car wash water recycling system. The cost of treating 1000 liters of wastewater is approximately eight dirhams, which proves that this design will ensure that car wash water is recycled in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

The project coordinator, Dr. Munjid Marqa said: “The importance of this project lies in considering car washing as one of the common uses that consume huge amounts of water, and given the large volume of water resulting from car washing, its complex composition, and the pursuit of the sustainability of the car wash industries, recycling This water is not just a process to meet the requirements of environmental protection, but it is also an opportunity to recover valuable water for reuse. ”

He added: “Car wash water may contain various pollutants, and these chemicals can reach the environment and pose a threat to the valuable resources we depend on. In addition, direct disposal of car wash water into the sewage system may also affect the efficiency of water treatment plants. Waste, and increases the load on these stations ».
