Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The Hamburg seaman's mission "Duckdalben" has already collected more than 500 gifts: at Christmas they are to be given to the crews of the ships.

«This is the first time in Hamburg!

We try to give each seaman their own gift, ”said seaman's deacon Jörn Hille of the German press agency.

The majority of the presents that will be distributed during this year's festival have been donated by Hamburgers.

"A present was decorated with a pine branch and a Christmas tree ball, very kitschy - but also kind of beautiful," said Hille.

Tips on what would go down well with the seafarers were given in advance.

"This includes warm socks, hats or chocolate Santa Clauses".

Around the 23rd and 24th of December, more than 40 large merchant ships with around 20 men on board each will be anchored in the port of Hamburg, as the deacon explains.

In 2020, things will also be different there: Before Corona, it was customary at Christmas to invite the crews to the "International Seamen's Club" later and to give them a group gift.

But because of the pandemic, this has become difficult, according to Hille.
