Hanover (dpa / lni) - According to the Midwives Association of Lower Saxony, there is a lack of childcare workers between the Harz and the North Sea, especially in rural regions.

“We assume that almost 30 percent of pregnant women who want care cannot find a midwife,” said state chairwoman Veronika Bujny on Friday the German press agency.

The situation in the area around Hanover and Hamburg is particularly tense.

Maternity wards have been closed in many places in recent years, and there are too few maternity centers.

In Emden, the delivery room should be closed next summer despite protests.

"I think this development was accelerated by Corona," said Bujny.

In view of the shortage of personnel, midwifery centers have been established in over a dozen regions across the country, bringing together parents-to-be and professionals.

As Pro Familia announced on Friday, since the start of the project in April 2019, the Hanover Region midwifery center has been able to provide “urgently needed care” to more than 1000 pregnant women via an online platform.

This corresponds to a success rate of around 80 percent of the inquiries.

The offer is urgently needed, even beyond 2021, it said.

Then the term of the project funded by the region ends.

According to the head of the association, Bujny, the midwifery centers are also a successful model for networking and training professionals.
