Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Stuttgart initiative “lateral thinking” is expected to sue against the ban on demonstrations on New Year's Eve in Berlin.

At the same time, the initiative expects that opponents of the corona restrictions will demonstrate in Berlin on December 31st.

Initiator Michael Ballweg informed the German Press Agency: "Since we continue to assume that the measures here in Germany are both unconstitutional and violate international treaties and fundamental rights, we will in all likelihood take legal action."

At the end of New Year's Eve, Ballweg said: "There will certainly be a lot of people coming to Berlin and wanting to exercise their right of assembly."

They are currently discussing how to proceed specifically.

“Thinking outside the box” had registered a large demonstration on the afternoon of December 31 on the Straße des 17. Juni between the Brandenburg Gate and the Big Star with 22,500 participants.

The usual big New Year's Eve celebration at the Brandenburg Gate with stages and booths has been canceled due to the corona pandemic.

According to the current Corona rules, demonstrations on December 31st and January 1st are not allowed.

At the end of August, many “lateral thinking” demonstrators failed to adhere to the distance rule.

On November 18, a similar demonstration was broken up by the police with the help of water cannons because almost no one was wearing mouth and nose protection.

Berlin's Senator for the Interior, Andreas Geisel (SPD), recently did not rule out future observation of the “lateral thinking” movement by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

“We are clearly observing extremist and anti-Semitic tendencies.

That's why the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has to look very carefully, "said Geisel.

A final assessment of the question had "not yet taken place" in Berlin.
