Werne (dpa / lnw) - The NRW care council is sounding the alarm: The situation in geriatric care is dramatic, especially in inpatient long-term care facilities, the care council emphasized on Friday.

The staff was already in short supply before the pandemic, meanwhile the situation is "catastrophic" in many places, emphasized the chairman Ludger Risse.

"Some facilities hardly have their own nurses available, because here too the sickness rate and the number of people infected with Covid-19 are constantly increasing."

In addition, employees from recruitment agencies - so-called leasing staff - are no longer available, as they are hired almost everywhere for work in vaccination centers or for test stations.

Now these colleagues were also missing in the care.

Often they are the last "lifeline".

The nursing staff should now carry out quick tests on staff, visitors and residents.

"That is not affordable and forces you to violate either the supply mandate or the NRW Corona Protection Ordinance," warned Risse.

"In many places this situation is unbearable and irresponsible."

A deployment of disaster relief workers could alleviate the situation somewhat.

These should be trained in testing and vaccination assistance and then used.

"If a disaster has to be declared, then it is time to do so before the situation becomes even more dramatic."
